Sometimes actors
are able to catapult their careers by showcasing their abilities with a
screenplay that they wrote for themselves. Good Will Hunting is a perfect
example of this, managing to make stars out of two supporting actors with a
screenplay that understood how to utilize their talents onscreen. No Clue is an attempt to do the same,
but more than anything it merely showcases Brent Butt’s inability to carry a
film.
Blending the
comedy of a ‘fish-out-of-water’ narrative with the detective storyline, Butt
stars as a bumbling salesman who is mistakenly hired as a private investigator
by an attractive femme fatale. Kyra (Amy Smart) stumbles into the office of Leo
Falloon (Butt), who is so smitten by her beauty that he is unable to tell her
that he is unqualified for the task of investigating her brother’s
disappearance. Against the advice of his friend (David Koechner), Leo tries his
luck as a private detective in the hopes that it will win him points with Kyra.
Unfortunately, all that Leo has to help him with the mystery is a sense of
humor.
Butt is a
Canadian comedian, and how could he really have a career outside of comedy with
a name like that. His quirky looks and self-aware sense-of-humor are not
entirely original or ineffective. In the end, he comes off as an actor who may
have been better off staying in the supporting roles. The DVD includes a
commentary track with Butt and director Carl Bessai, as well as a
behind-the-scenes featurette.
