It has been done before, and there isn’t a whole lot new in this Canadian cop show. The major difference seems to be the blending of the soap opera elements which have made medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy a success. There is less that is realistic about this cop drama with highly attractive professionals who enjoy bed-hopping between catching crooks, but somehow that seems to be the point. It is less about gritty realism and more about the glamour. And somehow that has worked well enough to last four seasons and counting.

The leading protagonist is usually Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym), who has the most romantic entanglements and usually offers voiceover introductions in the style of Meredith Grey. All seem to look at the police force as a dating pool rather than a job. But this is the point of the show, so I digress. When not making out with each other in closets and behind one-way mirrors, they occasionally go out on calls and make rookie mistakes. This is a show about rookie cops, after all, even if they are no longer rookies after four seasons.

The fourth season offers even more twists and turns than ever, with all kinds of unbelievable situations which find their way into the lives of these characters. Daytime soaps don’t have these many unrealistic occurrences, from baby abductions, paternity lies, a cop-killing sniper and a medicated officer. There is almost too much, but it keeps the story moving fast enough to distract audiences from at least a portion of the poorly written storyline.

The mild distraction of season four of “Rookie Blue” is now available in four-disc DVD set. The special features include five making-of featurettes and some webisodes adding to the storyline somewhat.
