At first
appearance, Machine Head looks to be
your average under-average ‘straight-to-video’ slasher horror film, complete
with the cast too attractive to ever consider taking an acting class. In a lot
of ways, Machine Head fits in the category, though it does so with a lot less
violence and gore than the genre has come to expect over the last few decades.
Instead, it hinges everything on a twist ending better than the whole of the
film.
There are a lot
of horror films with low production values, but there hardly even seems to be
an effort made with Machine Head, from the screenplay on down. The manner in
which characters are killed doesn’t even align with horror movie tradition, and
this is apparent when the first few kills are done quickly with a gun. Guns
rarely work in horror, especially against a group of defenseless coed holed up
in a house on spring break.
The title comes
from a muscle car that a group of girls on their way to a remote vacation home
in Palm Springs
encounter. The muscle car roars past them and then lingers for a while, all
hinting of danger to come. The girls are meant to join up with three guys, who
are the first victims of the anonymous assassin. More uninspired deaths follow,
until we are given an explanation that hardly makes the bad acting worth
enduring.
The DVD special
features include a photo gallery and a trailer.
