Before Moulin Rouge and before Romeo and Juliet, Baz Luhrman made a
film which was a cultural phenomenon, resulting in a newfound popularity in
dance shows. Eventually reality television in America would catch up and create a
“Dancing with the Stars” program of its own, an international phenomenon which
began shortly after the success of this Australian sleeper. The film takes an
energetic look at the world of competitive ballroom dancing, with a convenient
romantic storyline between dance partners to round the film out. It has a
signature Luhrman feel to it, both in the style and the romantic content. Not
to mention the musical numbers and dance sequences are actually quite
phenomenal.
