The Cutting Edge

Few sports films are also romantic comedies, and even fewer have teammates as the lovers of the storyline. The Cutting Edge is a clever genre-blending film, and one I must have watched a couple dozen times when I was younger. This is one of those films which was also always played on television, but it is much more exciting to watch in high definition.

The story is about a pair of ill-matched partners. Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney) is a hockey player who can’t seem to make it professionally, which leads him to consider a unique offer which still allows him to skate. He is injured in a way which makes this his only option, however unorthodox a move it may be for a hockey player. Kate Mosely (Moira Kelly) is a talented but difficult figure skater whose attitude has scared away all partners. These two pair up and attempt to make a winning Olympic team together.

Although they can’t stand each other at first, we know where the story is headed. She is a snob and he is rough around the edges. She is not patient and he doesn’t know the intricacies of ice skating and holding a woman instead of a hockey stick. They may call each other names at the beginning, but by the end we know that they will be partners on and off the ice.
